Outfit Ideas for Men: What to Wear for Every Occasion
Start with the occasion, then choose the shirt, then let trousers and shoes follow. For office and interviews, wear a white or light blue shirt with navy or charcoal trousers and black shoes. For day functions, choose warm colours or linen with beige trousers. For evenings, go darker: black or navy with charcoal and leather shoes.
The quick answer: one table for every occasion
Most outfit decisions come down to four choices: the shirt, the trousers, the shoes and how far you dress up or down. Start with the occasion, then pick the shirt, then let the trousers and shoes follow. The table below is the short version; each row links to a full guide.
| Occasion | Shirt | Trousers | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formal / office | White, light blue or fine pinstripe, tucked | Charcoal, navy or grey formal trousers | Black or dark brown Oxfords or Derbies |
| Interview | Plain white or light blue | Navy or charcoal, pressed | Polished black or dark brown lace-ups |
| First day at a new job | Textured white or light blue, one notch above the office | Navy or charcoal; chinos at a startup | Polished leather |

How to choose a shirt for the occasion
Think in two dials: colour and formality. Lighter, plainer colours (white, light blue) read more formal in the day. Darker solids (black, navy, near-black) read more formal in the evening. Checks, textures and warm earth tones read relaxed. Fabric matters too: smooth, close weaves look sharper; slubby or open weaves look easier.
Formal and work
Plain or pinstriped shirts, tucked in, with a belt matching your shoes. See formal dress for men for an office wardrobe that works five days a week, interview dress for men and what to wear on your first day at a new job.
Celebrations and family functions
Indian functions run from relaxed day events to formal evenings. A good shirt works for many of them, but not all. Our wedding guest guide, Tamil wedding guide, engagement outfit guide and Diwali outfit guide are honest about where ethnic wear is expected.
Social, parties and dates
Aim one step smarter than the room. A well-fitted shirt with dark jeans covers most evenings. See date outfits for men, party wear for men, birthday outfits and farewell outfits.
Hot and humid days
Fabric first, colour second. Read summer outfits for men before buying anything for April to September.
Match the colours, then the fit
Once you know the occasion, use the shirt and pant colour matcher to pair any shirt colour with trousers and shoes. If you are unsure which colours flatter you, the what colours suit me quiz takes a minute. Fit matters as much as colour: shoulder seams at your shoulder bone, enough room to button without pulling, sleeves ending at the wrist bone. The size guide has the chart.
Five rules that hold everywhere
- Match belt and shoes in colour family.
- Keep one thing interesting: a pattern, a texture or a colour, not all three.
- Tuck for formal, untuck only if the hem is designed for it and ends mid-fly.
- Press the collar and placket even if nothing else.
- When in doubt, dress one level up.
mtsya shirts by occasion
mtsya makes a small range of shirts, each with the Matsya fish stitched small at the left chest and nothing else added. Manu White and Hard Rain (white with burgundy and grey pinstripes) cover the office and interviews. Deep Water (near-black) and Ash (black, slubbed) work for evenings, parties and receptions under a blazer. First Light, Geru and Silt suit day functions, Diwali and dates. Foam and Sandbar, our two linen shirts, are made for summer. See them all in the collection.
Our name comes from Matsya, the fish that guided Manu's boat through the flood: a quiet guide is what this page tries to be.

Questions, answered
What is the most versatile outfit for men?
A white or light blue shirt with navy or charcoal trousers and dark brown leather shoes. It works for office, interviews, dinners and most family events, and you can add a blazer to dress it up or roll the sleeves to dress it down.
How many shirts does a man need?
Five to seven covers most lives: two white or light solids for work, one pinstripe, one dark solid for evenings, one check or earth tone for weekends, and one or two linen shirts for summer.
Can I wear a shirt to an Indian wedding?
Yes, for many functions such as haldi, mehendi, and cocktail or reception evenings with a blazer. For the main ceremony many families expect a kurta, sherwani or bandhgala, so ask the hosts if unsure.
Should a shirt be tucked in?
Tuck it for formal and office settings. Untucked works for casual settings when the hem is curved and ends around the middle of your trouser fly; longer shirts look sloppy untucked.
What colour shoes go with most outfits?
Dark brown leather is the most flexible: it works with navy, grey, beige and olive trousers. Black is more formal and best with charcoal, navy and black. White sneakers cover most casual outfits.
