Why linen works in Indian heat
Linen is woven from flax fibre. The fibre is stiff and hollow, so the cloth stands slightly away from the skin instead of clinging, and air moves through it easily. It also takes up moisture and lets it go quickly, so a linen shirt dries out faster than most shirts on a humid afternoon. That is why it has been the summer shirt of choice for so long: in Chennai in May or Delhi in June, it simply feels cooler.
Linen vs cotton: which shirt should you buy?
| Linen | Cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel in heat | Cooler, airier, dries fast | Soft, but holds sweat longer |
| Creasing | Creases easily, softly | Stays smoother |
| Look | Relaxed, textured, natural slub | Cleaner, sharper |
| Best for | Summer, travel, weddings by day, holidays | Year-round office wear |
If you live through long, humid summers, at least one linen shirt earns its place. If you need a crisp shirt for a strict office, cotton or a smooth weave will look neater by evening.
How linen creases, and why that is fine
Linen creases. Sit in a car for an hour and it will show. This is the nature of the fibre, not a fault, and it is part of the look: a linen shirt is meant to read relaxed. Iron it while slightly damp for the smoothest finish, hang it after wearing, and accept the soft creases that come back through the day. Each wash makes linen softer.
What about linen-cotton blends?
Blends mix linen with cotton to crease less and feel softer from the first wear. They are a fair compromise, but they give up some of the coolness and the texture that make pure linen worth buying.
How to wear a linen shirt
- Sleeves rolled to just below the elbow, two or three neat folds.
- Untucked with a curved hem for weekends and holidays; tucked into light trousers for a day wedding or lunch.
- Top button open, always. Linen and a tie rarely agree.
- Colours: white linen with beige or navy trousers; beige linen with white, olive or navy. See white shirt combinations and beige shirt combinations.
- Shoes: loafers, espadrilles, clean white sneakers or leather sandals.
How a linen shirt should fit
Give linen a little ease. A regular fit lets air move, which is the point of the cloth. The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder bone and the chest should leave room to pinch an inch or two either side. Check your size on the size guide; our sizes run S to XXL.
Linen counts, explained
Linen yarn is graded by count: the higher the number, the finer the yarn. Wearable shirting linen starts around 50s; 60s and 70s are finer, lighter and smoother. We explain counts on the cloth.
The mtsya linen shirts
Foam is white linen and Sandbar is beige linen. Both have a soft point collar, a clean placket, single-button cuffs, a curved hem and tonal buttons, sewn at 15–17 stitches per inch, with the Matsya fish stitched small at the left chest, the fish that guided Manu's boat through the flood. ₹1,499, free shipping in India, returns within 30 days.
Questions, answered
Is linen good for Indian summers?
Yes. Linen fibre is stiff and hollow, so the shirt stands away from the skin and air moves through it. It also dries quickly, which makes it one of the most comfortable shirt fabrics for humid Indian heat.
Does a linen shirt crease a lot?
Yes, linen creases easily and softly. It is part of its relaxed character. Iron it slightly damp for a smooth start and hang it after wearing; most people find the creases look natural rather than untidy.
Linen or cotton: which is better for summer?
Linen is cooler and dries faster; cotton stays smoother and crisper. For hot, humid days and holidays choose linen. For a strict office where a sharp finish matters all day, a cotton or smooth-weave shirt may suit better.
Can I wear a linen shirt to a wedding?
Yes, especially a day or beach wedding. Tuck a white or beige linen shirt into light trousers, add loafers, and keep the collar open. For a formal evening wedding, a smoother shirt with a blazer is safer.
What do linen counts like 60s mean?
The count describes how fine the yarn is. Higher numbers mean finer, lighter, smoother cloth. Shirting linen typically starts around 50s, with 60s and 70s being finer. Our page on the cloth explains counts in more detail.
