What to Wear to a Wedding as a Guest (Men)
Dress by function. For haldi and mehendi, wear a light or warm-coloured shirt or linen with beige or white trousers. For sangeet, a festive kurta or a dark shirt with a blazer. For the main ceremony, many families expect a kurta, sherwani or bandhgala. For the reception, a dark or white shirt under a suit works well.
The short answer
An Indian wedding is several events, and each has its own dress code. Daytime functions (haldi, mehendi) are relaxed: bright or warm colours, light fabrics, a good shirt is welcome. Evening functions (sangeet, reception) are dressier: darker colours, a blazer or a festive kurta. For the main wedding ceremony, many families expect a kurta, sherwani or bandhgala, and a shirt alone can look underdressed. When unsure, ask the hosts.
Function by function
| Function | Mood | Does a shirt work? | What to wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haldi | Daytime, messy, yellow | Yes | Light shirt you don't mind staining, white or yellow tones, cotton or linen trousers |
| Mehendi | Daytime, colourful, relaxed | Yes | Light checks, warm earth tones, linen; kolhapuris or loafers |
| Sangeet | Evening, dancing | Sometimes | Festive kurta or Nehru jacket; or a dark shirt with a blazer if the family is relaxed |
| Wedding day / pheras | Ceremonial, traditional | Usually not on its own | Kurta pyjama, sherwani, bandhgala; follow the family's lead |
| Reception / cocktail | Evening, Western-leaning | Yes, with a blazer | Black, near-black or white shirt under a suit or blazer, leather shoes |
Haldi outfit for men
Turmeric stains. Wear a light shirt you are happy to sacrifice, in white, cream or soft yellow, with cotton or linen trousers and sandals. Keep it simple; you will be photographed mid-laugh, not posed.
Mehendi outfit for men
This is the most relaxed function and the best place for a shirt. Choose warm or bright tones, a light check, or linen. Roll the sleeves, untuck if the hem is curved and short enough, and wear loafers or kolhapuris. Beige, cream or white trousers keep it fresh.
Sangeet outfit for men
Sangeet is an evening of dancing. Many guests wear a short kurta with a Nehru jacket. If the family leans Western, a dark shirt with a blazer and chinos works; make sure you can move your arms.
Wedding day: be honest about ethnic wear
For the main ceremony many families expect traditional clothing: a kurta pyjama for guests, a bandhgala or sherwani for close family. A shirt and trousers at the pheras can look underdressed, especially if you are family. Friends of the couple at a smaller or Western-style wedding can wear a suit. If in doubt, ask, or follow what the groom's friends are wearing.
Reception outfit for men
Receptions and cocktails are where Western formal shines. A black, near-black or white shirt under a navy, charcoal or black suit or blazer, with black or oxblood leather shoes. A pocket square adds festivity without fuss. Skip the tie or wear a dark one.
Day vs evening: the colour rule
| Day functions | Evening functions | |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | White, cream, pastels, warm earth tones, light checks | Black, near-black, navy, deep jewel tones |
| Fabrics | Linen, light open weaves | Smoother, denser weaves, silk blends |
| Shoes | Loafers, kolhapuris, mojaris | Polished leather, embellished juttis |
Avoid head-to-toe white at Hindu weddings unless the family has asked for it, and avoid outshining the groom in red or gold. For more pairings, use the shirt and pant colour matcher.
mtsya shirts for wedding season
For mehendi and day functions, First Light (a light check on white with red-orange, mustard and sage) and Geru (warm rust-brown) feel festive without shouting. For haldi, our linen shirts Foam (white) and Sandbar (beige) keep you cool. For the reception, Deep Water, near-black and smooth, sits quietly under a blazer. Each carries only the Matsya fish, stitched small at the left chest, the fish that guided Manu's boat through the flood. See all shirts or read the full occasion guide.

Questions, answered
Can a man wear a shirt and pants to an Indian wedding?
Yes for day functions like haldi and mehendi, and for the reception with a blazer. For the main ceremony, many families expect a kurta, sherwani or bandhgala, so a shirt alone may look underdressed. Ask the hosts if unsure.
What colour should a male guest avoid at a wedding?
Avoid all-white at most Hindu weddings unless asked, as it can be linked with mourning, and avoid heavy red or gold that competes with the groom. Black is fine for evening receptions but some families avoid it at ceremonies.
What should men wear to a mehendi?
Something relaxed and colourful: a light check or warm-toned shirt, or linen, with beige, cream or white trousers and loafers or kolhapuris. A short kurta also works well.
What should men wear to a wedding reception?
A suit or blazer in navy, charcoal or black over a black, near-black or white shirt, with polished leather shoes. A pocket square adds festivity; a tie is optional.
What should a guest wear to a day wedding in summer?
Breathable linen or a light kurta in pale or pastel colours, with loafers or mojaris. Avoid dark, heavy fabrics and full suits in the afternoon sun.
