How India sizes shirts
Indian formal shirts are sold by collar in cm: 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 46. Casual shirts are sold by letter. Some brands, such as Marks & Spencer and Tommy Hilfiger on their published charts, use numbers that match the body chest in inches (38, 40, 42) rather than the collar, which is why a "40" can mean different things. Read the chart heading.
UK and US sizes
The UK and US both use collar in inches, often with a sleeve length for formal shirts (for example 15¾/34). Casual shirts use the same S to XXL letters as India, though US sizes can run a little larger.
European sizes
Europe (Germany, Italy, France) uses the collar in cm, the same numbers as Indian formal shirts. A European 41 is a UK 16. Italian brands sometimes size slimmer at the same number.

Two brands' L can differ by five inches of garment chest. Published charts we checked in October 2026 put an L between 42 in (Mufti) and 47.2 in (Uniqlo), each from that brand's published size chart. Questions, answered
What is size 40 shirt in letters?
A size 40 collar is usually a medium (M). Where a brand's 40 refers to body chest in inches rather than collar, it is also close to M. Check the chart heading.
What is a UK 16 shirt in Indian size?
A UK 16 collar is about 41 cm, which sits between Indian 40 and 42. Most men at 16 inches wear an L, or an M in a regular fit.
Are EU and Indian shirt sizes the same?
For formal shirts, mostly yes: both use the collar in cm. Fit differs by brand, and Italian brands often cut slimmer at the same number.
Is a 42 shirt L or XL?
A 42 cm collar is usually L. A 42 inch body chest is also usually L. XL starts around a 44 collar or a 44 to 45 inch chest.
Do US shirts run bigger than Indian shirts?
Often, yes. US casual sizes tend to be cut with more room at the same letter, so many Indian buyers take one size smaller. Compare garment chest to be sure.
