Should You Tuck In Your Shirt? The Length Rule
If the hem falls past the middle of your fly, tuck it in; if it ends around the middle of the fly, you can wear it out. The length rule, hem shapes, and tuck rules for every occasion.
Use the length rule. Stand straight and look at where the shirt ends. If the hem falls below the middle of your fly or covers your seat completely, tuck it in. If it ends around the middle of your fly, you can wear it out. Then let the occasion decide: formal settings always call for a tuck, relaxed ones rarely do.
The length rule
| Where the hem ends | What to do |
|---|---|
| Above the belt or waistband | Too short to tuck; wear out (cropped or boxy cuts) |
| Around the middle of the fly | Wear it out, or tuck: your choice |
| Below the fly, covering the seat | Tuck it in |
A shirt designed only to be worn out is usually cut shorter with a straight hem. A shirt designed only for tucking is long, with deep tails. Most good everyday shirts sit between the two.
What the hem shape tells you
Straight hem
A flat, level bottom edge. Made to be worn out. Common on casual shirts, camp-collar shirts and boxy cuts.
Curved hem
Longer at the front and back, higher at the sides. The curve lets the shirt sit in place when tucked, and drape neatly over the hips when worn out. A shallow curve is the most versatile shirt you can own.
Deep tails
Very long, dramatic curves on formal and dress shirts. Always tuck these: worn out, they look like a nightshirt.
Tuck rules by occasion
| Occasion | Tuck? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interview, formal office | Always | With a belt, and a jacket if expected |
| Business casual office | Usually | Wear out only if the shirt is short and the office relaxed |
| Weddings and functions | Yes | Untucked works under a bandhgala or Nehru jacket |
| Under a blazer | Yes | An untucked hem showing below a blazer looks messy |
| Dinner, date | Either | Tucked with trousers; out with jeans if the length is right |
| Weekend, travel | No | Out, or a loose half-tuck |
| Over a T-shirt | No | Worn open as a light layer |
Which body types should tuck
- Shorter men: tucking lengthens the legs. If you wear it out, keep it short.
- Taller men: can wear shirts out more easily, as long as they are long enough to cover the waistband when arms are raised.
- Broader at the middle: a regular fit worn out, or tucked with a slightly loose blouse, is more comfortable than a tight tuck.
How to tuck neatly
- Tuck before you fasten. Put the shirt into your trousers before doing up the button and belt.
- Military tuck: pinch the spare cloth at each side seam, fold it back towards your back, flat, then pull the trousers up over it. This removes the balloon at the sides.
- Line it up. The placket, belt buckle and fly should form one straight line.
- Raise your arms. If the shirt pulls out, it is too short to tuck all day.
The half-tuck
Tuck only the front few inches at the centre and leave the rest out. It suits relaxed fits with jeans or linen trousers, and shows the waist without looking formal. Keep it loose and casual; a neat front tuck with a perfectly flat back looks forced.
Common mistakes
- Wearing a long formal shirt untucked.
- A tight tuck that pulls the buttons open when you sit.
- No belt with a tucked shirt and trousers that have belt loops.
- Wearing a shirt out under a blazer.
Our shirts: made for both
Every mtsya shirt has a curved hem, cut in one regular fit, so it can be tucked into trousers for the office or worn out over jeans at the weekend. The soft point collar and single-button cuffs keep it from looking stiff either way. Try Silt or Geru worn out with chinos, or Manu White tucked with a belt and navy trousers. Small at the left chest is the stitched Matsya fish, the fish that guided Manu's boat through the flood. Browse the full collection.
Getting the size right matters more than any rule here: a shirt too short will not stay tucked, and one too long looks untidy out. Check your chest against the size guide, then see outfit ideas for men and the shirt and pant combination guide for what to wear with it. For more on cut, read slim, regular, relaxed or boxy.
Nine shirts, each named for a moment of the Matsya flood. The fish stitched small at the chest.
